Public Feedback Welcome Through January on Draft Plan for Serving Older Adults

CA Logo 4A draft of Columbia Association’s (CA) Comprehensive Plan for Serving Older Adults is now available for public review. Feedback is welcome through Jan. 31 via a comment form or by attending one of two upcoming public meetings.

The public review draft and comment sheet can be found online at ColumbiaAssociation.org/OlderAdults. A limited number of printed copies are available upon request by calling 410-715-3121.

CA asks that community members use the comment sheet to suggest changes and that comments be as specific as possible, including page numbers and recommendation numbers, as appropriate, to help CA team members understand your comments and suggestions.

For more than a year, a CA work team has been developing the Comprehensive Plan for Serving the Older Adult Community. The work team’s findings and recommendations will be presented at a pair of public meetings on Monday, Jan. 13, at Slayton House, which is located at 10400 Cross Fox Lane in the Wilde Lake Village Center. The first session will go from 10 a.m. to noon, while the second session is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m.

Meeting content will be the same at both sessions. An inclement weather day has been set for Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the same times.

These meetings will review and discuss the plan process, findings and draft recommendations with the community. The presentations will be followed by a question-and-answer period. Comment sheets will be available for ideas and suggestions from participants.

Following these meetings, CA will prepare a revised draft that will be reviewed for approval by the CA Board of Directors.

Over the course of this project, CA has used a number of different avenues to identify older adults’ needs in Columbia. The community input has included public meetings and small group discussions, an intercept survey of older adults and a statistically valid telephone survey of the older adult community. In addition, CA project staff reviewed a number of recent studies, surveys and reports that also address the needs and desires of the older adult community.

Columbia Association Surveying Community Members to Help It Serve Older Adults

ca-initialsColumbia Association (CA) will be gathering input from the community for its Comprehensive Plan for Serving the Older Adult Community and has contracted with the Mason-Dixon Polling & Research to conduct a telephone survey of adults 45 years and older.

“We encourage anyone who is randomly picked to be called to take and complete the survey,” said Rob Goldman, chief operating officer and vice president for CA. Goldman is chairman of the work team that is developing the plan. “It’s really important that we get good, quantifiable data to understand what older adults in our community want and need as they age. This will help CA to provide and advocate for the programs and services that will best serve them now and into the future.”

The telephone surveys will contact residents on landlines and cellphones and will start in the second half of September. The questions will cover topics such as physical activity and exercise, transportation, social and cultural activities, aging in place and services for older adults.

The meetings of CA’s work team are open to the public. For a schedule of upcoming meetings, minutes from past meetings and other related materials, please go to ColumbiaAssociation.org/OlderAdults. For more information, please email Rob.Goldman@ColumbiaAssociation.org or call 410-715-3121.

PHOTOS: CA’s Pools Host Young Triathletes, Yoga, and Aqua Fitness

It was a hot weekend, the mercury reaching levels typical for Central Maryland at the height of summer. Thankfully, as these photos show, there were several ways to stay cool in — or near — Columbia Association’s pools.

Nearly 600 young triathletes came to Clemens Crossing Pool in Hickory Ridge for the annual Kidz Triathlon.
