Your route to a healthier lifestyle can bring you to the lakes and pathways, might take you to gyms and fitness classes, and even could see you saddling up on horseback or lacing up roller skates — all as Get Active Howard County kicks off for 2013.
The goal of Get Active Howard County is to increase awareness of healthy lifestyle habits and to motivate people to participate in a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days per week. That begins with a jam-packed 10 weeks of free activities and events being offered across Howard County by many of the county’s leading institutions and wellness professionals, plus other local organizations and businesses focused on wellness in the broadest sense. The calendar of activities is intended to provide opportunities across all demographics.
These activities include horseback riding lessons, Pilates, yoga, children’s activities, walks, nutrition and health education and much more. While the program officially kicks off on Monday, March 25, there are free events being held in March so that people can learn more about Get Active Howard County and register for the program.
Columbia Association (CA) is hosting a free event on Saturday, March 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Supreme Sports Club, located at 7080 Deepage Drive. The event includes Zumba® and Tae-Bo demos, roller skating and more. And on Saturday, March 23, there will be a Community Boot Camp in the Park kick-off event from 9 a.m. to noon at Centennial Park. For more information about Get Active Howard County and the free kick-off events, or to register, go to GetActiveHowardCounty.org.
Individuals, workplaces, community organizations, religious groups and the school community are expected to take part in the program — whether on their own or on teams. Signing up to be on a team is easy, and registration is ongoing. Teams can be any size. Once your team is signed up, you will have the ability to participate in the many free events that are being offered.
