In November 2011, the American Camp Association (ACA) recognized three Columbia Association (CA) team members with Service Awards for their hard work and dedication to CA Camps. The Service Award is given to honor individuals, groups or organizations for their efforts to promote camping. It is given for outstanding leadership, service or noteworthy contributions to the advancement of camping.
CA congratulates team members Brittany Dunbar, camp administrator; Monica Herber, Art Camp director; and Katie Lee, Nature Camp director, on their achievements.
Brittany Dunbar has been involved with CA Camps since age five. She has risen through the ranks at CA from a camper, junior counselor, counselor, front desk receptionist to camp administrator. After completing her degree at Washington College, she decided to stay and work in the Camps Department and her efforts have far exceeded expectations. She has taken the reins with the ColumbiaCamps.org website, social media, marketing, camp pictures, green initiatives and staff paperwork. Brittany works in the off-season analyzing and reporting data from the previous summer, planning new camps and coordinating both the open hire event and open house. Her passion for camp is tremendous and her caring spirit, especially for campers, is remarkable.
At a young age, Monica Herber is our most experienced camp director. She developed Art Camp from the ground up, instilling her love and appreciation for the arts to elementary and middle school children around Columbia. Monica’s camp combines the history, instruction and creation of fine arts from all eras and for all skill levels. She displays her campers’ work in a show presented at the Columbia Art Center; and new this year, shehas combined performing arts and exercise for an eclectic curriculum. Outside of the studio, Monica continuously strives to assist other camp directors and makes community involvement a priority in her life. CA’s Art Camp is a community favorite because of her hard work and skills.
Katie Lee is the director of our longest-running, largest and most popular summer camp, Nature Camp. Katie attended Nature Camp as a child, started her employment as a junior counselor, and has worked her way up through the ranks. Katie has preserved the 40-year legacy of Nature Camp and has added her own touches along the way. Her most notable accomplishment was the creation of an inclusion camp for children with special needs. Katie’s design allows the children to participate in all Nature Camp activities with assistance from certified special needs instructors. Katie’s devotion to her team members, campers and parents alike make her a CA favorite.
